Problem
Although greenhouses can increase farmer’ income by 5-8 times, in many developing countries, farmers cannot use them. In China, over 50% of government-subsidized plastic greenhouses stay unused. This hinders the growth of farmers’ income and agricultural productivity. It also causes a social issue of younger farmers fleeing for higher-paying jobs in cities. Additionally, without maintenance, plastic greenhouses deteriorate into un-degradable garbage, causing environmental issues.
Solution
To address these problems, we formed “Farmtopia”, creating and maintaining a new system for farmers:
- An APP on phones is developed to provide simple instructions for farmers, resolving issue of lacking know-how.
- Automated greenhouse to save heavy labor work.
- Greenhouse leasing offers to avoid heavy upfront investment.
- Involved power companies to provide free, green electricity for automation.
Software
By now, we have re-utilized 1 greenhouse, increasing farmers’ income by over 7 times. We will expand our research to solve its current limitations on locations and crop types. In 2024, our greenhouse data system will link with the supermarkets to enable production on demand. In 10 years, we plan to renovate greenhouses on 530,000 acres of farming land and help 927,000 farming households.
Hardware (Prototype)
Our team is pioneering the use of the latest 'transparent' solar panels and has discovered that their combination with greenhouses offers tremendous potential for farming.
Pilot Greenhouse
We collaborated with the pilot village of Qiao Tou. This collaboration included designing and building the first innovative greenhouse, achieving collaboration with farmers, and initiating further development conversations with photovoltaic power companies (PPCs) and solar panel companies (SPs)
